Homeless Shelter - everyone gravely hungry

I went to a homeless shelter yesterday (The Bridge, in downtown Dallas). I went to check it out because a group from my church is going to be volunteering there soon. During the lunch rush, everyone looked gravely hungry and many looked sad. Allegedly the shelter serves 800 people a day for lunch. I did not get to count. A black guy came up to me and said, "Hey, pretty!" as he was walking by. The Bridge just opened last year, and is in what I would call the armpit of the city.

I miss Pine E-mail. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Who is butchering Careless Whisper on the radio? It is very disturbing.
Love,

Alice

I will try to post some pictures soon. Oh, by the way, today was a partially sunny day and Tuesday was a sunny day.

Kids Writing Connection.

Hi all:
I went to a banquet last night for the KIDS WRITING CONNECTION. The Kids Writing Connection is a program at John F. Kennedy Elementary in Dallas, in which students, usually in 4th or 5th grade, are matched up with adult mentors. During the school year, the children meet with the mentors for 1 hour a week. From the beginning to the end of the school year, the children produce a piece of fiction that goes into a magazine at the end of the year. My child's story was "The Adventures of Billy Bob Jr. and Brittney."
In other years, the Kids Writing Connection banquets have been blossoming with people. This year, only a small amount attended. The 2009 banquet was a testament to the fact that not enough people are participating. There were NOT ENOUGH mentors, NOT ENOUGH parents, and there was also NOT ENOUGH money to have a larger banquet (the organizer of the program told me she did not get as much money from grants as she normally does.)
I know that times are hard, but some things do not cost money. So my question is, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, why the lack of enthusiasm this year? The program has been going on for 15 years; I do not want to see it slowly dying down each year.

I went to Whole Foods today.

Hello Blogger Groupies

Hello Blogger Groupies (should I say NDH groupies?):

Welcome to another Delicious blog.

i love the new (well, kind of new) store EntertainMART (on the corner of Preston and Alpha Roads). I brought about 13 CDs and 4 DVDs there and got $27.00 for them. I actually got $32.50 but I bought a movie that was $5.50 (title is The Invisible Circus, with Cameron Diaz and Christopher Eccleston). They have tons of movies and CDs and even though the store is kind of humongous in a scary Sam's Club way, I still LIKE it. But it is not the New CD World (See a prev. blog, circa Aug. 2008), that title belongs to CD Warehouse on Beltline Road.

i was in the 99 Cent store today and in the Stationary Aisle, a girl (she was about 12) was holding her baby brother(he was no more than 6 months old) awkwardly, almost like she was going to DROP him. A minute later her mother came down the aisle and said, "Dammelo, Flaquita!!" which, roughly translated, means, "Give him to me, Skinny Ninny!!" If you don't know, "Flaquita" is just a term of endearment. I did not see what they bought or anything, but I bought several useful items.

saw a lady with a cool hat while I was driving. It was a KENTUCKY DERBY hat. Since her car sped by while I was sitting at a light I did not obtain further DETAILS.

Keep It Simple, Chill, Invest in Love (I saw this on a Christian Church sign the other day), and go and buy the new Bob Dylan CD (if u can afford),

Alice (your favorite flaquita)

Quick Vignette. I could not think of a Creative Title

Hi Faithful Readers:

I'm tired. This weather is killing me (Fri-gray, Sat.-gray, Sun.-gray, Mon.-gray, Tues.-gray and muggy, Wed.-gray and muggy, Thurs.-gray and muggy). All of this has been interspersed with periods of gloominess and/or rain (and also brief moments of sunshine!). I do not mind the rain it is the Grayness that is killing me. I saw a pickup truck yesterday that looked like it belonged in a Miami Vice Special. On the back there was a bumper sticker that read, "FREE VIEQUES," for Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. The pickup was a dark color with bright pink and purple splashes on the side. I observed it at a shopping center at Preston and Royal (my Favorite Hangout). Before that I went into Daugherty's Drugs but did not find anything to buy. Heard a funny conversation in TARGET (or Tar-jay!)--earlier Wed. morning--but I will save that for next time.
Not doing a rain dance,

Alice
