Wednesday moanin' -- copying from Bob Talbert of the Detroit Free Press

blogger friends:
Here is an interesting experience: the other day i was at the scary gas station (despite its scariness they have a lot of good stuff there) near my apartment, taking a photo of the Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory on Henderson and Greenville--it had just rained and the sky was kind of dark so I thought it would make a nice photo--and this obnoxious black guy started talking to me. I will summarize with quotes: (First he said something, I don't know what he said, and I thought he said, "Do you got a cig?") Then: "Why are you taking a picture? Why are you taking a picture?"
"Because I want to." (Wishing he would leave me alone).
"Are you gonna put it on your Myspace page?"
"Maybe I will." (NDH does not have a myspace page. And I don't want one right now.)
"There go your model," referring to a homeless guy that was standing on the corner talking to himself, who wasn't actually in the picture, kind of on the side.
"Actually, you would make a better model but I'm not taking one of you right now." That shut him up. Fun experiences at the scary gas station!

I responded to an ad that said promotion girls needed, in the Dallas Observer. I asked what I would be promoting and how much I would be getting paid. Here is a copy of the e-mail I received today:

Hi Alice,

Thank you for your interest.
1.) We have several events around the corner, most of them will be concerts, car shows, bridal shows and sports events.
2.) Pay in general is $20.00 an hr.
3.) Product promotion will be according to the client. Most of it will be just to show a friendly smile and look nice.
4.) Must be comfortable with Small shorts or miniskirt.
5.) High heels is a plus.
6.) Will need stand up pictures like the ones attached please send.
As soon as you send your pictures we will forward them to our clients and we will contact you back as soon as possible.

I don't know whether to think their response is slightly sad or a good opportunity right now.

This guy came to the door at my parents' house today. He was from Edward Jones. He asked if I had an IRA, I told him no. I was thinking, I've been meaning to work on my resume for 2 weeks and I feel like my career is in a slump and I've been praying that it will be resurrected soon, so NO I DO NOT HAVE AN IRA. Is there an age at which they stop allowing you to start an IRA??????????????????? question mark overkill.

I saw a guy brushing his teeth on the sidewalk yesterday near my apartment. He was wearing a long red shirt with a red jacket and had really holy jeans. He had a bottle of water with him but I didn't see him use it. I was walking to the corner when I first walked past him and saw him brushing his teeth. Then when I walked the other way he was still brushing his teeth. It made for an interesting walk!!!!

I just got the new Raconteurs CD, Consolers of the Lonely (from CD World in Addison--I went there Monday.) My favorite tracks are #1, Consoler of the Lonely, and #12, Rich Kid Blues. On the album cover, Jack White and the rest of the Raconteurs are dressed in what looks like early-1900s gear and standing on top of a float. If you get a chance, go to their site:

It is kind of retro, if a site can be called retro.
Enough Wednesday moanin'. (Thanks to Bob Talbert, a former columnist at the Detroit Free Press, for the "Wednesday Moanin'" idea--thank you Bob, wherever you are).
Go (now!) and buy The Raconteurs, Consolers of the Lonely. It will console you if you're lonely.
I'm a work in progress, but isn't everybody?

commercial played during olympics and Sheryl Crow and praying

hello blogger friends:

Has anyone seen the commercial played on NBC during the Olympics ... It contains a bad ripoff of the Michelle Branch song, "You're Everywhere to Me." I like the Michelle Branch song better. Poor Michelle Branch. And the commercial is so annoying, they play it every 2 seconds. Hey NBC: get a new commercial, it is not drawing in viewers. Maybe I am just noticing it a lot because I watched the opening ceremonies and they were playing it a lot then.

I've been praying a lot lately. I pray about everything. I'm like a praying machine. Hmmmmmm, I've always prayed but I have been doing it more the last few weeks. Our father, who art in heaven, forgive me for taking up so much of your time... I remember when I first learned that prayer I thought some parts of it were weird. "Forgive us our trespasses..." I was thinking, whats that supposed to mean? but now I understand.

I went to see Sheryl Crow and James Blunt in Houston on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (it was actually in The Woodlands). James Blunt came out first and he kicked ass. He had a large band with him and he gave them props. I'm not the hugest fan in the world but I like that song, "You're Beautiful," which he sung that night, after dancing on top of his piano. Sheryl was also good, I did not like her outfit, she was wearing a sparkly jacket with a black vest underneath and jeans. She sang "All I Wanna Do," "Strong Enough," (not sure if that is the exact title) and "A Change Will Do You Good," the 3 songs I wanted to hear the most. She was really good and got the whole crowd moving (even the baby boomer in plaid shorts in front of me). There were lots of older people there in general. You should go see Sheryl and James if you get a chance. There was another group there but I cannot remember their name and did not see them. We had really good seats so that was cool.

Going to go for now, I have some praying to do.
Chillax (and please Chillax, it means Chill + relax),
Bow down to Sheryl Crow and James Blunt,

going to try to write this blog fast

going to try to write this blog fast since I want to go home and its 6:14. going to eat some chips first.

ok, now I am fully chip-ified I can blog effectively. (I wouldn't want to dissapoint).

yesterday at Toastmasters this recessionista overheard a friend telling someone there should be a "hot guy aisle" at the supermarket. I echo her sentiment, but what does this mean? I will have to ask. Would it be only for hot guys shopping, or also for hot employees???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ok, question mark overkill. that's why its fun blogging.

I saw a job ad in the Dallas Observer (I am a frequent reader) that said "Must be Money Motivated." Who isn't money motivated???????????????????????????????????????? again, question mark overkill.

I am going to take a photography class at Richland College. yesterday I was there registering and there were some people from Burundi registering for classes. If you don't know where that is, look it up. it can be your geography lesson for the day. this blogger is not going to tell you.

I got a bipolar book from my shrink. It's called "Bipolar Disorder: The latest assessment and treatment strategies," by Trisha Suppes and Ellen Dennehy. However it was published in 2005, so does it really contain the "latest" assessment and treatment strategies?
This should be a fun pre-bedtime book to read.

I feel like I am drinking things too fast. Whenever I drink a diet Pepsi or other drink I feel like I drink it too fast. Maybe I should learn to savor every taste. does anyone else have this problem?

Peace,
NO music news today.
It's only 7:05. yay.

hob ... Love Love, Kiss Kiss

I saw Alkaline Trio Tuesday night at the House of Blues. The venue: the house of blues is a cool venue, except it looks really shiny and new and I don't like that. I'm more of a fan of older venues like the Granada. I was trying to take photos of people because I want to become a photographer and I'm trying to get all the practice I can get. But the battery died on me.

The band: Alkaline Trio was awesome. Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano, and Derek Grant rocked it out. Their energy got the crowd moving and body surfing. Most of the crowd looked like they would get grounded if they weren't home by 10 p.m. Made me feel old, in a good way. I would def. go see the trio from McHenry, Illinois (near Chicago) again. After the band finished their set, the audience begged for more and the trio graciously came out and played two more songs. I did not see the two opening acts, American Steel and the Fashion, which sucks.
Love Love, Kiss Kiss is one of my favorite songs from their latest release, Agony and Irony (this is the only album I have--although the boys have been around since 1996): "Love love, kiss kiss ... blah blah blah
You're making me sick, I wish you'd just stop showing off
For the rest of us that no one wants to love
It's hard enough trying to drink another winter all alone
Love love, kiss kiss ... blah blah blah
Well do you find you like to fall in love with people that you're never gonna meet?
It's easier than breaking up and crying in the street."
On the way home from the concert I got into an accident. While I was changing lanes this car sideswiped me and then drove off at 90 m.p.h. I had a flat tire and I stopped in Victory Park and these two cops (actually off-duty DPS officers) changed it for me. I called my dad. At a time like that, you need a parent. Memo to self: must read article on changing a tire that I got from JANE magazine. Repeatedly.
Please go and buy Alkaline Trio, Agony and IRony.
I found 2 new flavors of hot pockets.
See ya,

oops

I spelled Alanis Morissette wrong. It's Morissette, not Morisette. My bad.
bbb

Alanis is back... and other blabbing... are you a Citizen of the Planet?

BBB is back... with a vengeance.
Ok, I just got the new Alanis Morisette CD, Flavors of Entanglement, from Starfuckers (not a dis to Starbucks I just like that word).
I haven't listened to all of the songs yet, but I like it so far. Track 9 has a funny title, "Giggling Again For No Reason." Again I have not gotten to that song yet bc I just listened to it in my car on the way here, but I will let you know. I also like track 1, "Citizen of the Planet. ON the cover there is a photo of Alanis, looking like "I am Alanis Morisette and you oughtta know I am deep and complex."
The other day I was at the Shell station on 635 and Preston, and I almost got run over by a 14-year-old driving a big white F-150.
YOu all must hear the band Oliphant, they are a local band. I heard them Sat. at Liquid Lounge, they are great. Very hard rock sounding but thats ok. They have a myspace and don't have time to type it in right now so look it up. Or else the rock gods will be mad.
I went to Harry's (frozen yogurt place)in Uptown today (hmmmm, makes it sound like I go to Uptown all the time and I DON'T). I had a cone with DEATH by CHOCOLATE, it was delicious. So try it if you can. Or the yogurt gods will be mad. I also talked to Harry himself.
I had a Hot Pocket last night. In order to warm it up, you must use a CRISPING SLEEVE. I just like that word. CRISPING SLEEVE. I am going to try to work it into normal conversation, as in, my EVIL BOSS should be put into a CRISPING SLEEVE and fried (or over-crisped, at minimum). Don't have an EVIL BOSS right now but that doesn't matter.
Bow down to ALANIS and Oliphant,
I got cat class and I got cat style.
bbb/alice
p.s. i like this quote: "please ponder your policy of perpetual procrastination" I heard this from a toastmaster friend recently, and no it was not said to me. So there.

give me a double honey

"If you came to make trou-ble, give me a double, honey, I think its good."
--From a song I overheard at the Starbucks on Gaston Avenue a couple of nights ago. I don't know who sings it. She had a mellow, jazzy voice. It is my new credo. GIVE ME A DOUBLE, HONEY.
I am at my parents' house blogging. I went to Toastmasters this morning and I am tired.
I went to Fantastic Sam's Monday to get my hair cut. (Yes, NDH goes to Fantastic Sam's. Do you think I can afford an expensive hair cut?????????) My stylist matter-of-factly informed me that he likes to drink water but it makes him go to the bathroom all day.
I like F.S. because it reminds me of when I was little and used to go there to get my hair cut. I got my hair cut up to my shoulders. At the end, my stylist asked me if I wanted shine spray and I said yes. This was a new thing for me --I don't think I've ever used shine spray. I enjoyed the decor, such as the signs that said things like, That Hair of Yours Is No Wallflower. The sign is right, That Hair of Mine is No Wallflower.
The other day (July 4th) I was going for a walk near my apt. and I accidentally got caught staring at this woman's house. It was a pretty big blue house, really old and on a street near my street. It was funny that she pulled up and I was like gaping at her house. I quickly walked away.
You all must buy a Glade clean linen candle. I got it at Walgreen's but I'm sure you can also find it at Target (Tar-jay) or wherever. It smells great, like freshly washed clothes. I plan to light it while I am writing my short stories so I can breathe in the clean linen.
Gotta go,

picking bananas out of my fruit salad...on a Saturday

Dear Blogger Friends,
now that I am done picking bananas out of my fruit salad to eat, I can effectively blog. Yes, bbb loves the potassium-filled fruit.
Did you know that this wednesday is the birthday of O.J. Simpson (yuck),Tom Hanks and John Tesh???????????????? Play a little instrumental piece in honor of Tesh.
I went to a neighborhood party yesterday. I got to try some red wine and my own rice (delicious!!!!!!!!) It was fun, bbb is such a good rice-maker.
I find that I keep getting checked out in my car. Sometimes it's ok, but I wonder, what is the universal sign (besides the commonly understood middle finger) for "stop leering at me through your windows?" If anyone knows, let me know.
Music news: I really like that song that goes, "shake- shake- shake- shake- a-shake-it." They play it on 106.1 Kiss FM a lot. I don't know who sings it. Every time I hear it I turn it up. It makes you wanna shake it.
Don't do anything nugatory,
Holding it down in the 75214,
bbb
p.s. I spent all day saying, "must blog" to myself. Phew, now I can stop saying that.
