Looking Good, and other Pertinent Matters

Hi Gentle Readers:

Free Advice: if you think you look cute, but nobody tells you that you look cute, you still look good. It's the personal outlook that matters.
If you would like to attend a Talent Show Friday, Oct. 30, come to The Stewpot, 408 Park Avenue, in downtown Dallas. The fun event begins at 2:00 p.m. All kinds of talent will be displayed; there will be writers on hand reading from their work. For more information on The Stewpot, visit www.thestewpot.org Their number is 214-746-2785. Not sure if anything about the Talent Show is on their Web site
Poem:
Untitled
This is the stillness of my Life
The stillness of parental-cloggedness
The stillness of the Rain
The stillness of calm, beautiful, profound Me

The end.

I'm still always trying to do the right thing.

Scaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaary Pumpkin

A Scary Hello!

The above photo of a scary pumpkin was taken at the corner of Preston and Royal, across from the Barnes and Noble, near a Gazeebo Restaurant and a Subway restaurant (Taken Thursday, Oct. 22)
I think the owners of the shopping plaza were trying to be spirited, but instead it is just a Scary, Odd pumpkin. Maybe even an Evil Pumpkin.

Poor pumpkin.
Boo!

Hi:

Here is a blog you should check out, by a homeless man in Dallas: http://www.dallastexashomeless.blogspot.com/

Update: The Mitch Albom Event Oct. 15 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. (Albom is a writer who wrote The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie).
I went because I like Albom and think he's a fabulous writer. I wanted to notify him about my homeless magnets, because he is interested in such causes. During his speech, he repeated some of the "stories" that are in his new book, "Have A Little Faith." But, when he did this, he made it sound natural. Albom was wearing a navy shirt and a black sport coat. Hmmm, you be the fashion judge. Lots of people (hundreds) went, drooling over Mitch. The rest of the update: I am glad that I talked to him. He signed my book: "To Alice. Mitch Albom '09" Some people write more, but that is ok.

Other news: I want to teach some English classes, sort of like "Ingles Sin Barreras," -- if you have heard of that -- but my own version. So that is one task I am working on right now.

Well, I have more to write (oodles, Gentle Readers!!!) but am super tired and want to sleep / e-mail / sleep some more. Weird thought of the day: When you force yourself to smile, sometimes it feels good. I think I have noticed this while at the Unnamed Bookstore.

I've been listening to: Eminem. Some of his songs on the album "Relapse,' are disgusting and horrifying. But, I do not normally listen to those songs. Another plug on behalf of Eminem: Go, Detroit.
Well, tired, dear readers.
Stay Away from Giant Pumpkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too many exclamation marks.

If You Live Downtown (Even If You Don't and Want to Visit) Feel Free to Come Out of Your House

Hey All:

I was walking downtown yesterday morning (Wed.) and here are my thoughts: I parked my car at Ervay and Jackson streets and wanted to find a place to eat breakfast. The reason I wrote at the top that downtown is becoming deserted is that it was halfway deserted Wed. morning and on many other occasions I have seen downtown (which, granted, encompasses a large area) either deserted, close to deserted, or with a sprinkling of people. (Except during the annual Turkey Trot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! exclamation mark overload).

So, I was walking and looking for a place to eat. Basically, downtown Dallas needs more restaurants and/or coffee shops (and commerce in general!!!). Between Ervay and Jackson and the McDonald's across from the Greyhound station on Lamar, I barely saw any restaurants. I ended up scarfing something at McDonald's and reading a Dallas Observer at the same time ( I stopped at Antone's Cafe at 1300 Main St., 214-760-0000 if you want to complain, at about 10:15, where the woman said snappily, "I don't have any more breakfast, and lunch doesn't start until 10:30." Uh, I thought this was a RESTAURANT.

ANYway, More commerce, more people, more ANYTHING downtown, please!!!! There was a pro-bicycle rally at City Hall that morning that I was trying to attend, so I'm glad for the people that organized it.

The Austin City Limits roundup (3 day music festival in Austin, Texas) is: it was very very muddy the last day; sort of like a mud wrestling pit at a fraternity house, fraternity brothers included!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! exclamation mark overload. It was awful and muddy and I cannot describe the Port A Potty's because it would be unprintable. But I did get to see The Dead Weather, which apparently is Jack White's (the White Stripes) new band. White is from Southwest Detroit. In case you did not know. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Props to Detroit.

Leading to Music News, I am now a purchaser of the Dead Weather's CD, Horehound, and ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead CD, The Century of Self. So, go buy them, or download, or just hum.

Who invented Boss's Day??????????????????? Question mark overload. There should be an Employee Working Their Butt Off Day.

Have to go. Peace, Love and Soleil Moon Frye.

Keepin It Real like J-Lo,

Austin, Why Have You Forsaken Me??

Blogging from Austin, TX.
I came here for Austin City Limits, a 3-day music festival and bonanza with a lineup of 130 bands (um, some of them hot, some of them not so hot, in my opinion). Highlights: I did get to see You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead (they are from Austin; I knew them by their Trail of Screaming Fans), and the Dave Matthews Band
The major drawback/mudpit moment of the day: Ok, basically it rained on and off the whole day yesterday (Austin why have you forsaken me??????????????????????????????????????????????????????? question mark overkill). This turned the ACL grounds into mushy mud mixed with a Roman Bath area. And there is hardly anywhere to go to stay dry, only a couple of tents which people were crammed into. It was just muddy, terrible, sloppy weirdness and hell. Hello, you need more shelters, some hot chocolate, more waterproof blankets, and many other items or provisions, A C L fest. I'm surprised that many people stayed for so long yesterday.
I will try to blog more soon. Using hotel computer.
Austin City Limits, why have you forsaken me???????????????????????????????????????????????????????? question mark overkill.
Have to go stay dry and toasty.

Peace.

Photo. Here You Go.

Picture is of the blue circle painted on the expressway overpasses leading into Deep Ellum in Dallas. It still says North Dallas Homegirl at the top. Look closely. Taken about 3 weeks ago. Maybe beginning of September.
